During the title insurance process, your title insurance company will work with you to make sure you understand the ins and outs of your policy and everything it covers. But what if there’s something in your policy that you realize you don’t like down the line? In this article, we are going to discuss when, if ever, you can change the language of your title insurance policy.

Title Insurance Policy Language

Most general title insurance policy forms are standardized, which means that much of the language in the policy is the same no matter who issues the policy. However, there are several sections within the policy that are changed, such as the property description, the exceptions, and the exclusions. These are the areas of your policy that require the most attention. Make sure you review these sections carefully and ask your title insurer if you have any questions or concerns.

It’s not easy to simply go in and change language in your policy that you don’t like. You may be able to remove or add an exception if you buy additional coverage or if a title issue is resolved, but in general it’s best to make sure you understand the entirety of your policy before executing it. Don’t assume you’ll be able to change things easily in the future.
